The snowy mountains of Calgary got a taste of Thailand’s heat. Three stars from Southeast Asia went to the Grey Eagle Resort on September 21st.
Yodsanklai Fairtex, Duangdawnoi Looksaikongdin, and Saenchai Saenphong taught seminars at the resort.
The Thai superstars visited fans and fighters worldwide. The Masterclass tours have support of the Thai Government’s ‘Soft Power’ Committee.
“I witnessed the passion of Muay Thai of the people in Alberta Canada,” Jumpoth Chawang Deputy Consul General of the Thai Consulate in Vancouver said. “Muay Thai is becoming a sport for everyone. Everyone can enjoy it and practice it.”
Duangdawnoi taught her technical style showing several sweeps and catches. For 15 year old Jasy it was a dream come true. The young Canadian trains out of United Fist Martial Arts in Alberta. She even got a chance to spar with the multiple time champion.
“It was super fun, her fighting style and art are just beautiful. I can take away a lot of the techniques she used on me,” Jasy said.
Following Duangdawnoi was the boxing computer, Yodsanklai Fairtex. The Southpaw athlete taught basic rhythm. He is a stadium and international champion. Yodsanklai used basic principles to advance his career to soaring heights.
Everything in sports has rhythm because If you don’t have rhythm everything is not good. “Rhythm is important,” Yodsanklai said.
The attendees for the event were diverse. They included new enthusiasts, seasoned athletes, and gym owners.
One gym owner Trevor Smandych glowed after the event.
“It was amazing. I have always watched these guys fight for so many years. Each of them had a little different approach how to fight. I liked what Yodsanklai taught, the timing,” Smandych said.
The Sports Authority of Thailand gave Smandych an award during the event. Other gyms including Muay Thai Academy, Diaz Combat Sports, Victory Thai Boxing, Dunamis Gym, and others were recognized by the SAT. It is part of the SAT’s program to certify established Muay Thai gyms around the world.
Muay Thai is the national sport of Thailand. And the Thai government knows that combat sports can unite nationalities. The Thai government is pushing forward the masterclass seminars as part of the “soft power” initiatives. These programs use culture to grow awareness of the sport and of the beauty of Thailand.
The Masterclass Seminar continues with its next stop in LA on September 28th.
